Sites monitor incoming and outgoing traffic to see which pages on their sites are popular or whether there is a clear trend, such as the number of times a particular page is being visited in a particular country.

There are many ways to track this traffic, and the collected data is used to structure the site, uncover security issues, or indicate a potential lack of bandwidth - not all web traffic is welcome.
In exchange for increased web traffic (visitors), some companies offer advertising schemes, whereby the site is paid for the space on the screen. Sites often try to increase their traffic by engaging in search engines and through search engine optimization.
Web traffic analysis
Web analytics measures the behavior of visitors to a website. In a commercial context, it specifically measures which aspect of the website works towards the business goals of Internet marketing;
For example, which landing pages encourage people to purchase. Notable vendors of web analytics software and services include WebTrends, Coremetrics, Omniture, and Google Analytics.
Web traffic measurement
Web traffic is measured to know the popularity of websites and individual pages or parts within a site.
Web traffic can be analyzed by looking at traffic statistics found in a web server log file, which is an automatically generated list of all pages used. A hit is generated when a file is introduced. The page itself is considered a file, but images are files too, thus a page with 5 images can generate 6 hits (5 images and that page). A page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within a website - a visitor will always generate at least one page view (the main page) and may have many more.
Monitoring of applications outside the website allows traffic to be recorded by inserting a small piece of HTML code into each page of the website.
Web traffic is sometimes measured by packet sniffing and thus random samples of traffic data are obtained from which information about web traffic across the entire Internet usage is extracted.
The following types of information are taken into account when monitoring web traffic:
- Several visitors.
- An average number of page views per visitor– A high number would indicate that the average visitor goes deep inside the site, possibly because they like it or find it useful.
- Average Visit Duration - The total length of a user's visit. As a rule, the more time they spend, the more interested in your company they are and prone to contact.
- Average Page Duration -How long a page is viewed. The more pages that are viewed, the better it is for your company.
- Domain classes - Information on all levels of IP addresses required to deliver webpages and content.
- Busy hours - The most popular times to visit the site will tell you what times might be best for campaigning and what times would be best for maintenance.

- Most Requested Access Page - The entry page is the one that a visitor first sees and it shows which are the pages that are attracting the visitors the most.
- Most Requested Exit Pages -Most requested exit pages help to spot bad pages, and y contain broken links or popular external links in exit pages.
- Headway - A route is a sequence of pages that are visited by visitors from entry to exit, with the top way identifying the route through which most customers pass through the site.
- Referrer - The host can monitor the (obvious) source of the link and determine which sites are generating the most traffic for a particular page.
Websites, such as Alexa Internet, offer traffic rankings and statistics based on people who visit the sites using the Alexa toolbar. The difficulty with this is that it does not take a complete picture of the traffic for a site. Larger sites usually employ other companies such as Nielsen NetRatings, but their reports are only available by subscription.
Control of Web traffic
The amount of traffic experienced by a website is a measure of its popularity. By analyzing the visitor statistics, it is possible to see the site's shortcomings and improve those areas. It is also possible to increase (or, in some cases decrease) the popularity of a site and the number of people using it.

It is sometimes important to password-protect certain parts of a site, allowing only authorized people to access particular sections or pages.
Some site administrators have chosen to restrict their page to certain traffic, such as by geographic location. US President George W. Bush's re-election campaign site (GeorgeWBush.com) was blocked to all Internet users outside the US on October 25, 2004, following news of an attack on the site.
It is also possible to limit the access of the web server, based on the number of connections and the bandwidth transmitted by each connection. On the Apache HTTP Server, this is accomplished by the limitconn module and others.
Increasing website traffic
Web traffic can be increased by placing a site in search engines and purchasing ads, which include bulk email, pop-up ads, and inter-page advertising. Web traffic can also be increased by purchasing non-internet-based advertising.
If a web page isn't listed on the first page of a search, a person is significantly less likely to find it (especially if there's other competition on the first page). Very few people go after the first page and the percentage of people who go to the next pages is very less.
As a result, securing a proper position on search engines is as important as the website itself.
Organic traffic
Web traffic that comes from non-paid listing in search engines or directories is commonly referred to as "organic" traffic. Web sites may be included in directories, search engines, guides (such as the Yellow Pages and restaurant guides), and award sites to generate or increase organic traffic.
The best way to increase web traffic in most cases is to register it with the major search engines. Just registering does not guarantee traffic, as the search engine works by "crawling" registered websites. These crawling programs (crawlers) are also known as "spiders" or "robots". The crawler starts on the registered home page and usually follows the hyperlinks it finds, and into access pages within the Web site (internal links).
The crawler collects information about those pages and stores and indexes them in a search engine's database.
In each case, those page URLs and index the page title. In most cases, they serialize the web page header (meta tag) and a certain amount of the page. Thereafter, when a search engine user searches for a particular word or phrase, the search engine searches the database and generates results, which are usually sorted by relevance according to the search engine algorithms.
Typically, top organic results garner most of the clicks from web users. According to some studies, the top result receives between 5% and 10% of clicks. Each subsequent result receives between 30% and 60% of clicks compared to the previous result. This shows that it is important to appear in the top results.
Some companies specialize in search engine marketing. However, it is becoming increasingly common for webmasters to be approached by "boiler-room" companies without any real knowledge of how the results are achieved. Unlike pay-per-click, search engine marketing is usually paid monthly or annually and most search engine companies cannot promise the specific results they are paid for.
Because of the immense amount of information available on the web, it can take a crawler several days, weeks, or even months to complete the review and indexing of all the pages it finds. For example, Google indexed eight billion pages as of 2004.
Even with hundreds or thousands of servers working on spidering pages, a complete re-indexing takes time. This is the reason why the recently updated pages in some websites are not found immediately when searching on search engines.
Web traffic overload
Excessive web traffic can dramatically slow down or even stop access to a website. This is because the server receives more file requests than it can handle and may be an intentional attack or simply because of high popularity. Large-scale websites with multiple servers can often handle the required traffic and smaller services are more likely to be affected by traffic overload.
Denial of service attack
A denial-of-service attack (DOS attack) forced websites to shut down after a malicious attack that filled these websites with requests they could not handle. Viruses were also used to support large-scale denial-of-service attacks.
Incidental popularity
Web traffic overload can arise due to sudden bursts of promotion. A news story in the media, a quickly circulated email, or a link to a popular site can cause this kind of visitor flood (sometimes called the slashdot effect or the Digg or reRedditffect).
Access type
- An analog connection without DSL is a connection where the computer is connected to the TAE socket via a modem. If there is a connection with a network provider, you cannot make or receive a call at the same time (since the connection is then blocked).
- With DSL, both the exchange line and the Internet are available instead of a line. To do this, the computer must be connected to a DSL modem. This in turn is connected to the DSL splitter, which splits the telephone and Internet connection into different frequency ranges. Telephoning and surfing at the same time are therefore possible. The splitter is connected to the TAE box.
- As a further improvement, an ISDN connection makes it possible to be connected to the network on the same lines at the same time, to operate a fax machine, or to the telephone via the normal exchange line (with two telephone numbers). DSL modems are available with different transfer rates.
A wireless router provides access to Internet connections and networks through the use of a wireless adapter. In many places, for example, WLAN access is provided in restaurants for a small fee. Service providers have WLAN finders in their software that detect open WLAN connections with sufficient signal nearby.
Terms usage and rating
The term is preferably used by internet service providers for cost accounting. Internet service providers provide resources for data transmission, the costs of which are passed on to the customers, i.e. the end consumers (called users in English).
In most entry-level offers, a free contingent (also free traffic or free volume) is offered. The customer only pays for additional data traffic that exceeds this free volume. Sometimes, for simplification, traffic is used instead of free traffic spoken. There is also the option of paying an agreed price, in which the amount of data actually used/converted and online time is irrelevant (DSL) flat rate.
In particular, the term traffic is used both in a negative sense for data traffic that is considered superfluous, which above all causes costs, and in a positive sense. Unwanted traffic is caused by hotlinking on websites, for example.
Providers are the network providers for the data traffic. In terms of operating mode, a distinction must be made between an analog and a digital (ISDN) connection, which also affects the transmission speed.
Privacy and Security
When data is exchanged via the Internet, data protection often falls by the wayside, especially if contact information is incorrectly given in the plain text. These can be read out very easily by spy programs (crawlers) - often misused - and used for dirty business (UWG).
InTorotect the security of one's own database from unauthorized access on the one hand, but also from the feeding in of interference programs, regular, preferably automatic, additions (updates) to the firewall and virus scanner driver databases used are required.
